UCplus in Tønder brings students a step closer to work with a well-attended Career Day
UCplus Language Centre in Tønder recently opened its doors for a busy career fair where local businesses, volunteer organisations and the municipal job centre met with Danish-language students. The aim was to expand the students’ networks and boost their chances of becoming active members of Danish society.
Thorough preparation pays off
Language consultant Mette Aaskov, who spearheaded the event and coordinated with local employers and NGOs, made sure the students arrived ready. In the days leading up to the fair, teachers wove job-hunting into their lessons: students wrote CVs, practised introductions and explored different industries and roles.
“It’s not enough just to show up—you have to feel confident talking to employers,” Aaskov explains. “So, we used class time to prepare them carefully, both linguistically and professionally.”
Local partners, real results
Several employers took part, including Plejecenter Solgården, Ballum Camping and Skærbæk Centret. Some have already hired UCplus students since the event.
Job-centre consultants Tommy Juhl and Michael Friis were on hand to field a constant stream of questions.
“You could tell the students had done their homework,” says Juhl. “A day like this lets them practise explaining what they’re good at and what they’d like to do.”
Friis adds, “We were busy—especially with students from Germany—asking about next steps. Their enthusiasm was obvious.”
A language centre rooted in the community
For the manager of the language centre, Pernille Linde, the career day is central to UCplus’s mission.
“We want even stronger ties with companies, the job centre and volunteers across Tønder Municipality. Helping students find a path into work—and into Danish society—is core to what we do.”
