Online Danish lessons led to jobs and a new life in Denmark

Even before Andreas and Magdalena moved to Denmark, they began learning Danish with UCplus through an online course aimed at Germans who had not yet relocated to Denmark. This became the key to both finding jobs and integrating into their new community in the Ringkøbing-Skjern municipality. Today, they both work full-time, are active in local organizations, and are happy to share their experiences with other newcomers.

Andreas now works at Mr. Beef in Ringkøbing, where he uses his Danish every day – and Magdalena enjoys life in the countryside and her job at the bakery in Hvide Sande.

Danish as the key to a new life

The dream of a new life in Denmark gained momentum in the summer of 2023 when Andreas and Magdalena decided to sell their Bed and Breakfast in Germany. With three dogs and a desire for more nature, peace, and community, they headed towards Ringkøbing-Skjern municipality. Even before the move, they took the first important step: learning Danish.

After trying both language apps and private lessons, they discovered UCplus’ online Danish courses for Germans through an information meeting at the Ringkøbing town hall. Here, they joined a special group for future immigrants. The course not only provided language skills but also practical knowledge about the Danish job market, CV writing, and job hunting.

“We were happy with the online course. It gave us a good start, and it was a big help when we started attending lessons at UCplus Language Center in Ringkøbing. There, we quickly learned to speak Danish, and we practiced at home – including writing messages to each other,” Magdalena explains.

Job, Language, and Community in West Jutland

In November 2024, the couple bought a house on the outskirts of Ringkøbing. Just three months later, they had both found jobs. Andreas now works at Mr. Beef in Ringkøbing, and Magdalena is a permanent part of the team at Hvide Sande Bakery – a connection she made through the information meeting in the municipality.

“I like speaking Danish, and if I can’t find a word, I say it in English – then my colleagues tell me what it is in Danish,” Andreas says with a smile.

Even though they now have a busy daily life, they still prioritize their Danish lessons and attend UCplus’ evening courses twice a week. In addition, they are active in Vedersø Shooting Club and volunteer at Kaj Munks Museum.

Every Wednesday, they still meet online with their old UCplus online class. Here, they share experiences and offer advice to other Germans who also dream of a new life in Denmark.

“We all agree! The language is the most important thing! When you learn Danish, it becomes easier to find a job and also easier to be social,” says Andreas, adding, “Magdalena and I have reached out to others – both at the Language Center, at work, and in our free time – and it has given us a good start.”

Magdalena nods and adds, “I’m happy with our life here. The nature is beautiful, and people are friendly and more polite than in Germany. Plus, we’ve got more free time together here.”
